It appears that even some of the guys who have been around for a while are unfamiliar with the meaning of some basic handicapping terminology. When someone refers to "buying the hook" it means that they are moving the point spread half a point in their favor. This is sometimes written with the half point represented by an apostrophe---- Example 6½ = 6.5 = 6'................If you notice the apostrophe looks somewhat like a hook, thus the terminology, "buy the hook".
